Training Programs

IYRS teaches the skills, history, art and science of building, restoring, and maintaining wooden and composite-construction boats and their onboard systems. We provide job training for the international boating industry and teach teamwork, self-respect and pride in good workmanship. Students from all over the world come to IYRS to study. Many graduates become professional boat builders and restorers. Other students gain work and life skills that will serve them well in any profession.

IYRS offers three Certificate training programs -- a 20-month program in Boatbuilding and Restoration, a 9-month program in Marine Systems and a 9-month program in Composites Technology. The programs provide students with the technical skills required to be proficient in these in-demand fields. In addition, students develop strong problem solving, teamwork, technical project management and leadership capabilities. The combined knowledge results in learning that honest work, integrity and mastery of a craft are among life’s great achievements. Download the IYRS Viewbook.

Our campus locations, a 2 ½ acre historic waterfront property in Newport and a 9,800 sq. ft. facility in Bristol, Rhode Island, provide access to many marinas, service yards, builders and restoration specialists. Located in the sailing center of New England, the area is rich in boating history and marine industry, including some of the most highly acclaimed boat yards and boat builders in New England. IYRS graduates are employed in these businesses, as well as the premier firms throughout North America and Europe.
