  • Students in the Class of 2010 are off on their externships at the following companies: Jamestown Boatyard, Cabott Lyman, Brewers Cowesett, New England Boatworks, Avondale Boat Yard, Brewers Dauntless, Cay Electronics,Nordhaven Yachts, Ocean Options, Millford Boat Works,and Kingman Yachting Center.

 

  • The Marine Systems facility up in Bristol is undergoing a major refit in preparation for the start of the 2010-2011 program in September.

Mastering the Complexities of a Boat's Inner Workings

The marine industry's hunger for skilled labor has increased over the past several years.  In response to that demand, Man working on an engineIYRS partnered with the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) to develop our state-of-the-art 9-month Marine Systems Program. Students learn the ins and outs of systems installation, repair, maintenance, and problem solving first-hand from industry professionals.  They get hands-on experience with today's latest technologies and finish the program prepared to apply their skills to virtually any professional scenario.

The following subjects are covered in-depth over the course of the year:

  • Electrical systems
  • Electronics
  • Steering systems
  • Fuel systems
  • Diesel engines
  • Gasoline inboard engines
  • Inboard/outboard and sail drive gear systems
  • Marine pumps
  • On board tankage
  • Marine sanitation systems
  • Marine LPG systems
  • AC and refrigeration systems
  • Fire fighting systems

Students are taught by industry professionals with considerable experience and certification in the field. At completion of the program, students will be prepared to sit for the relevant ABYC certification exam, the highest level of industry certification available in the country. The Marine Systems program is held at IYRS’ satellite campus in Bristol, RI and runs from September through May. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.

Tuition for 2010: $16,990 plus fees
