The Museum of Yachting

About MoY

For more than 25 years, the Museum of Yachting (MoY) has worked to preserve the culture and heritage of yachting. Situated on one of the most beautiful seaside locations in New England, today the Museum celebrates the traditions of yachting through the presentation of informative exhibits and educational programming.

The Museum is undergoing a renaissance with a renewed focus on its mission to inspire and educate our constituents. In 2007, the Museum converged with the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS). Together, these two Newport organizations are creating a rich educational living heritage experience by coordinating exhibits, events, and restoration projects.

Our Mission

Founded in 1979, the Museum of Yachting is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) dedicated to preserving the culture of yachting by fostering education and enjoyment of its history through the presentation of vessels, artifacts, literature, events, and regattas.

The William I. Koch Collection: Art, Artifacts & Memorabilia of the America’s Cup

IYRS and the Museum of Yachting are proud to announce the opening of a summer exhibition displaying the fine paintings, rare books and silver, photography and historic memorabilia from a private collection representing and celebrating the history of the America’s Cup. The show is comprised entirely from the collection of William I. Koch who has generously loaned these rarely seen, selected objects.

Mr. Koch is well known in the world of sailing for his intense passion that led to two Maxi Yacht World Championships in 1990 and 1991, his winning the 1992 America’s Cup and the development of the first all-women’s team for the 1995 America’s Cup. He is equally well known for the passion that has led to diverse collections of paintings and sculptures that include works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Modigliani, Picasso and others, as well as an exceptional and extensive wine cellar and a collection representing the history of America’s West. His collections have been shown at many of the world's leading museums—including the Louvre in Paris, The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, which recently exhibited “Recapturing the Real West: The Collections of William I. Koch.”
