Marine Systems
Mastering the complexities of a boat's inner workings.

The onboard systems on today’s boats are technically advanced—and as that technology develops further, so too does the marine industry’s need for skilled technicians.
To meet the industry’s need for trained professionals, IYRS partnered with the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) to develop a state-of-the-art Marine Systems program. Students learn the ins and outs of systems installation, repair, maintenance, and problem-solving from industry professionals with longtime experience in the field.
During the six-month program students get hands-on experience with today’s latest technologies and also do a student externship to gain real-world experience. Students are prepared to sit for the relevant ABYC certification exams, the highest level of industry certification available in the United States. When graduates leave IYRS, they are prepared to tackle the many challenges that today’s marine technicians face on the job.
The Marine Systems program runs at the school’s satellite campus in Bristol, a Rhode Island coastal town with a high concentration of marine companies. The program is run twice a year, September through February and March through August. Classes are held Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm.
The following subjects are covered in the Marine Systems program:
- Electrical systems
- Electronics
- Steering systems
- Fuel systems
- Diesel engines
- Gasoline inboard engines
- Inboard/outboard and sail drive gear systems
- Marine pumps
- Onboard tankage
